Metalico, a ferrous and nonferrous scrap metal processor that operates in western New York state, is the largest fabricator of lead-based products, other than batteries, in the United States. The company s scrap business purchases all forms of metal scrap from manufacturers, small-scrap dealers, demolition contractors and peddlers. It is then sorted and prepared for sale to mills, furnaces and foundries. The company s lead fabrication business operates six locations in the U.S., which annually consume approximately 120 million pounds of lead metal to produce more than 100 different base products. A large portion of the raw material for this operation comes from Metalico s recycling and smelting operations where more than 2 million auto and truck batteries were recycled in 2005. Founded in 1997, Metalico is headquartered in Cranford, N.J. The company s stock is traded on the American Stock Exchange under the symbol MEA.
