All of the Schnitzer family businesses can trace their roots to a one-man scrap metal operation. Schnitzer Steel Industries still deals in scrap metal, but on a larger scale. The company is one of the largest recyclers of ferrous metals and manufacturers of finished steel products in the United States. Schnitzer is also a leading recycler of used and recycled auto parts through its chain of Pick-N-Pull self-service auto parts stores. With its joint venture partners, the company processes more than 4.9 million tons of recycled metals a year. Operating throughout the West Coast, one of Schnitzer Steel Industries facilities is located in Portland, Ore.
